A lawsuit is a legal proceeding filed by a plaintiff (or claimant) party against one or more defendants. In some cases a settlement between the parties can be reached, but often a lawsuit results in a court appearance with a trial attorney seeking to resolve the dispute before a judge.
In a class action lawsuit, the plaintiff is a group of people who collectively bring their complaint before a judge. In these cases, many individual but similar cases are combined into a single case.
